The Shockoe Institute was recently established in Richmond, Virginia, as “a national organization dedicated to revealing the evolution of American racial slavery, its enduring impact, and using the lessons of that history to improve our civic life.” To bring this mission to the public, the Institute transformed the lower level of historic Main Street Station into a permanent, interactive place of learning to house its inaugural exhibit, Expanding Freedom.
Glint Events had the honor of partnering with The Shockoe Institute team to bring their multi-event grand opening celebration to life. The events spanned from morning educational programming to a formal evening reception, bringing together municipal and state leaders, prominent scholars, local residents, and visiting students. From final-stage planning and event production to overall execution, our team managed every operational detail of the day to ensure a seamless experience for all in attendance.
Morning Keynotes, Student Engagement, and Interactive Discovery
The day began with high anticipation as guests gathered in the main hall adjacent to the new exhibit. Attendees, including local Richmond students and church groups, as well as students and youth groups traveling from Northern Virginia, filled the space for opening remarks from the president of the institute, the Mayor of Richmond, and the Governor of Virginia. A pivotal moment of the morning was the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, which brought together key executive leaders, public figures, and team members whose vision made the institute a reality.
Following the opening ceremony, attendees moved into the exhibit to experience the space firsthand. The daytime programming paired high-level keynotes with interactive, human-centered learning, as well as large group discussions and fireside chats detailing how the exhibit came together. Attendees also engaged with the "Art Glass" augmented reality (AR) technology, an immersive installation that shared the story of an enslaved man.
Transforming Main Street Station for the Evening
As the afternoon educational sessions concluded, our event production team efficiently converted the spaces from an active learning hub into an inviting, celebratory evening atmosphere.
To transition the space, the team introduced tailored soft seating lounges, full-service bars, rich floral arrangements, and warm ambient lighting. Guests arriving for the formal reception walked along a candlelit red carpet flanked by dramatic draping. At the top, they were welcomed by a tiered champagne tower, live acoustic music, and an atmosphere designed to foster deep connection and conversation.
An Evening Filled with Powerful Conversation and Local Celebration
A central highlight of the evening was an on-stage discussion featuring Dr. Justene Hill Edwards, a distinguished history professor at the University of Virginia, and Eugene Robinson, former editor and columnist for The Washington Post. Centered on themes from Robinson’s book, Freedom Lost, Freedom Won, their discussion offered guests a profound opportunity to reflect on history and the collaborative effort required to establish The Shockoe Institute.
To conclude the evening, local Richmond band The Brotherhood took the stage, bringing vibrant energy and live music to the room. It was a memorable conclusion to a landmark day, and Glint Events was deeply honored to be a part of it.
