Where It All Began: Maggie & Tim’s Charlottesville Celebration
When Maggie and Tim first reached out to us, they had exactly one vision fully finalized: a wedding in Charlottesville, where their love story began. Though they’ve since traded the East Coast for the shores of San Diego, having met as students at the University of Virginia, they wanted to return to exchange their vows at the UVA Chapel. We had the pleasure of being introduced to them through our past couple, Carley and Dylan, and it was a joy to begin our planning journey from the start, guiding them through every decision and building the architecture of their day from the ground up.
A Meaningful Place
The ceremony at the UVA Chapel was a beautiful nod to the couple's history. For a doctor and a military officer who built their foundation in this city, the historic stone walls provided a sense of timelessness and gravity. It was a true gathering of their two worlds, with many of Tim’s military colleagues joining family and friends to witness the couple return to the place where it all started.
From Inspiration to Reality
Planning a Charlottesville wedding from the West Coast requires a deep level of trust and a collaborative creative spirit. Maggie’s vision was a vibrant tapestry of ideas, sharing bits of inspiration through late-night emails and spirited phone calls. Her primary wish was to find a reception space that showcased the rolling hills of the Virginia countryside, which led us to The Clifton Inn. With its panoramic views and storied charm, it provided the expansive, elegant backdrop her vision demanded.
Martini Chic and Olive Accents
The design palette was a sophisticated blend of classic Virginia style and modern, editorial details. We leaned into a Martini Theme for the entire weekend, which served as a playful yet polished thread throughout the weekend. This motif inspired custom graphics, which appeared on many design elements, including the invitations, welcome bag tags, and cocktail napkins. To bring an unexpected, fashion-forward element to the cocktail hour, we utilized a rich olive green palette and tied delicate bows around the stems of the martini glasses—a small detail that felt both whimsical and high-end.
A Legacy of Traditions
What truly made Maggie and Tim’s celebration stand out were the deeply personal touches and family legacies woven into the fabric of the day:
The Stadium Cup Tradition: In a nod to their alma mater and a beloved family tradition started by the Father of the Bride, guests received custom blue and orange stadium cups. Inside were mesh bags of M&Ms in school colors: blue and orange for UVA, and yellow and red for Tim’s military school.
Generational Inspiration: The wedding cake was a sweet tribute to the women in Maggie’s life, with a design meticulously inspired by the wedding cakes of both her mother and grandmother.
A Moment of Ceremony: Honoring Tim’s service, the couple used his military sword to cut the cake, marking their first act as husband and wife with a stirring tribute to his career and their future together.
As the sun set over the Charlottesville hills, it was clear that every spark of inspiration had found its perfect, polished place. Maggie and Tim’s wedding was a masterclass in how personal history and modern style can coexist. From the first phone call to the final toast at The Clifton Inn, it was an honor to see their vision come to life in the city that started it all.
Congratulations, Maggie and Tim!
